"Hotel California" is the title track from the Eaglesalbum of the same name and was released as a single in February 1977. This album reached the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top ten of several international charts. Since its release, "Hotel California" has been covered by a number of artists and has become a part of the international popular culture.
The Eagles recorded the track with Don Henley on lead vocal three different times, twice at the Record Plant in Los Angeles and finally at the Criteria Studios in Miami.

From the beginning, it had been apparent that the song was taking on a life of its own, however. Because of its length - it was running at six and a half minutes - the record company was reluctant to release it as a single. Luckily, the band persisted and eventually won the argument - in March 1977, the song gave them their fourth American No.1.  In Britain it got to No.8, giving them their biggest UK hit.
Three months after its first release, the single was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), representing one million copies shipped. In 2009, the song was further certified Platinum (Digital Sales Award) by the RIAA for sales of one million digital downloads and has since sold over 3 million downloads.
